The collective body of research conducted over the last 25 years about the performance of compost for environmental applications is well documented. This lesson provides an overview of the many applications for compost filter sock and reviews the specifications critical to their performance. After reading this page, you will understand how Filtrexx products Mimic Nature® to manage rain where it falls.

Mimic Nature®

Man-made systems for sediment and erosion control cannot compare to the performance of Filtrexx® Compost Filter Soxx™. This simple but ingenious system harnesses the following natural design principles:

  • Containment
  • Filtration
  • Retention
  • Detention
  • Energy dissipation
  • Vegetation establishment

The ONLY Mesh that Meets Spec

Unlike silt fence, straw wattles, or inferior sock, Filtrexx® lets water through while keeping silt and clay inside the Soxx™. There are five material specifications that are critical to performance:

  • Material Type
  • Design Diameter
  • Mesh Opening
  • Tensile Strength
  • Functional Longevity

Particle size matters

Filtrexx® FilterMedia™, made from composted wood trimmings is designed for optimum filtration and hydraulic flow. It is used for most Filtrexx sediment and erosion control applications.

Filtrexx Mesh

Filtrexx offers several different mesh materials ranging in size and strength to meet the needs of the project, while also meeting federal and state specifications.

Media

FilterMedia™

Filtrexx® FilterMedia™, made from composted wood trimmings is designed for optimum filtration and hydraulic flow. It is used for most Filtrexx sediment and erosion control applications. To ensure proper performance, FilterMedia must meet specs for particle size—60% retained on 3/8” sieve. See the spec for more info.

Alternate FilterMedia™

Filtrexx® Alternate FilterMedia™ is commonly a non-composted wood chip product, which is suitable for sediment and erosion control applications, but is not recommended for pollutant removal other than sediment. To ensure proper performance, Alternate FilterMedia must meet specs for particle size—60% retained on 3/8” sieve. More info can be found in TechLink #3330.

GrowingMedia™

Filtrexx® GrowingMedia™, made of composted yard trimmings, is designed for optimum vegetation establishment and long-term plant growth. GrowingMedia is the standard media used in Filtrexx vegetated sediment and erosion control applications. It is also used for gardening and agriculture applications with GardenSoxx®. GrowingMedia must meet spec for optimum performance.

Two-Thirds of Sediment Storage Capacity is in the Media

Only Filtrexx FilterMedia is certified to meet the necessary flow-through rates specified by both the EPA and most state regulators.

  • Filtrexx 18″ Soxx exceeds the performance of super silt fence
  • Filtrexx 12″ Soxx exceeds the performance of e tube and 24” silt fence
  • Nothing matches the performance of Filtrexx 24″ Soxx
  • Filtrexx exceeds performance of comparable e tube and silt fence by an average of 283%
